A Mind with Mental Illness is a Magnificent Mind!
The Magnificent Minds Project was created as a way to celebrate the immense creativity, ingenuity and artistic brilliance that exists within individuals who have mental illness. It is a non-profit organization that collaborates with businesses, organizations, metal health providers and others in the community to provide artists who have mental illness with venues where they can showcase their artistic expressions. Our mission is to eradicate stigma attached to mental illness by developing allies and advocates that will join us in creating diverse opportunities, education and advocacy promoting artists who have mental illness. Recognizing the magnificent contributions individuals with mental illness make to our society through the arts is a key value of our organization. We foster traditional and unconventional collaborations, allowing all who participate in the Magnificent Minds Project to engage in mental health advocacy.
The Magnificent Minds Project helps local artists with mental illnesses gain exposure for their work by submitting their art for gallery exhibits. We outreach into the community, asking professional galleries to donate their space to host art exhibits featuring work done by artists with mental illness. Individuals are able to submit their art and if the artist chooses to create a piece specifically for a Magnificent Minds Project exhibit, we will fund the purchase of the art supplies they need to create their piece. Artists are allowed to submit previously completed art work and are permitted to sell their work at the exhibits, with 100% of the proceeds from the sale going directly to the artist. We also arrange to have artists’ work displayed in the community, at professional establishments, who wish to host art work to show their support for mental illness. In addition, artists can have their artwork displayed on the Magnificent Minds Project website free of charge. The Magnificent Minds Project is a multifaceted effort to engage both the traditional mental health system of service providers and the broader community in advocacy against stigma for the mentally ill. A key component of this project is that it flourishes through donations, in various forms, supplied by the community.
