The Art Association of Harrisburg:”a very inclusive organization, welcoming to everyone who enjoys art on any level.”

The Art Association of Harrisburg was founded in 1926 with the mission of promoting the visual arts through exhibitions and education. Until 1964, AAH mounted top-quality exhibitions in locations such as the Civic Club, the Harrisburg Public Library, and other sites. Then in 1964 the AAH Board purchased the historic Governor Findlay Mansion at 21 N. Front Street in Harrisburg and transformed the lovely home into 5 spacious galleries, classrooms and offices. This was literally Harrisburg’s first real “art centre,” long before Whitaker Centre was established. In 1986, AAH also established a Sales Gallery in which to market member artists’ varied works.

AAH now presents ten exhibitions annually in the Findlay Mansion, featuring an eclectic variety of art by regional, national, and even international artists. Additionally, AAH mounts exhibitions in community sites such as Dauphin County Courthouse, Highmark/Blue Shield, Penn National Insurance, Martin M.Sacks, Homeland Centre, and Reservoir Mansion. AAH offers 31 classes for youth and adults in four annual semesters, both in the studios on Front St. and in four studios in Reservoir Park.

The Art Association provides scholarships to youth and adults with financial difficulties, and over the years, has often been happy to include students with mental disabilities in our classes.

Getting to Know the Art Association of Harrisburg’s President, Carrie Wissler-Thomas

I was President of the AAH Board from 1980 through 1984, and was hired to be President/Executive Director of the organization in 1986. Prior to my employment as CEO, I had served as Chairman of the Easter Seals Art Show by Artists with Disabilities for several years, had been Chairman of the Mid-Susquehanna Arts in Education Council, and had been a private art instructor and free-lance art writer. I had also taught oil painting at the Art Association for several years.

The Art Association of Harrisburg is a very inclusive organization, welcoming to everyone who enjoys art on any level. Open seven days per week with no admission fee, AAH often has visitors who bring in their artwork to share and to review. Our staff tries to be helpful to all who enter our doors.

We welcome the Magnificent Minds exhibition to our community site of Reservoir Mansion this summer, and applaud the project’s encouragement of artists who are challenged with the difficulties involved with mental disorders.
